Google Pay Unveils New Features at Global Fintech Fest 2024: UPI Circle, UPI Vouchers, and More

At the recently concluded Global Fintech Fest 2024, Google Pay made waves with the announcement of several innovative features and partnerships designed to enhance the digital payment experience for Indian consumers. These updates reflect Google Pay’s ongoing commitment to making payments simpler, safer, and more accessible to a broader audience across the country.

Introducing UPI Circle: Simplifying Payments for Everyone

One of the standout announcements was the introduction of UPI Circle, a feature aimed at empowering users to include their trusted family members or friends in their digital payment journey. Recognizing that many Indians still rely on cash or are hesitant to use UPI due to various concerns, UPI Circle allows an existing Google Pay user to add secondary users to their account.

Users can choose between two delegation modes:

This feature is particularly useful for those who want to help others make digital payments without requiring them to link their own bank accounts.

UPI Vouchers: A New Way to Pay

Google Pay also introduced UPI Vouchers, or eRupi, an innovative prepaid voucher system linked to a mobile number. This feature allows recipients to make payments using any UPI-supported app, including Google Pay, without the need for a bank account. Google has partnered with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Department of Financial Services to roll out this feature, which aims to make digital payments more inclusive and accessible.

ClickPay QR Scan: Hassle-Free Bill Payments

Another exciting feature is ClickPay QR Scan for bill payments, developed in collaboration with NPCI Bharat Billpay. This feature simplifies the bill payment process by allowing users to scan a QR code to instantly fetch and pay their latest bill. No more remembering account details or consumer IDs—just scan and pay. This feature is expected to make bill payments quicker and more convenient for millions of users.

Prepaid Utilities Payment: Managing Recurring Payments

Google Pay is also expanding its offerings in the recurring payment space with the introduction of Prepaid Utilities Payment. Users can now discover and link their prepaid utility accounts, making it easier to manage and pay for services like energy. As more providers come on board, this feature will help users keep track of their recurring payments, all within the Google Pay app.

Tap & Pay with RuPay Cards: Fast and Secure Transactions

Lastly, Google Pay announced Tap & Pay for RuPay Cards, a collaboration with NPCI that allows RuPay cardholders to make quick, secure payments using their mobile phones. Users can add their RuPay cards to Google Pay and simply tap their phone on any card machine to pay—no need to carry a physical card. Importantly, Google Pay does not store the 16-digit card number, ensuring secure transactions.

Conclusion

These new features underscore Google Pay’s mission to make digital payments more convenient and secure for every Indian. By addressing the needs of different user groups, from those hesitant to adopt UPI to regular users seeking more streamlined payment options, Google Pay continues to lead the way in transforming the digital payment landscape in India.
